Job Description

The Associate Scientist-Gene Therapy Technology will perform cellular and molecular assays to assess gene delivery and gene editing


  • Culture of cell lines and primary human cells such as peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPC);

  • Support construction, synthesis and evaluation of polymer-based DNA/RNA/CRISPR delivery vehicles in different disease models;

  • Perform the characterization of physical and chemical properties of gene delivery /gene editing nanoparticles;

  • Carry out flow cytometry, qPCR and RT-qPCR assays to evaluate the efficiency and toxicity of gene delivery and gene editing;

  • Support knock-out or knock-in cell line development activities with gene editing techniques.

  • Present experimental data at departmental or project team meetings.

  • Work as part of a team and independently, perform experimental work and report results.

  • Draft Research Protocols or Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for the production of gene delivery vectors or generation of cell lines for approval by Scientist and/or Senior Scientist and QA.

  • Perform routine maintenance of scientific instrumentation, as required.

  • Ensure critical instruments are calibrated and calibration records maintained.

  • Ensure that high safety standards are taken into account and adhered to as governed by local, state and federal regulations, laws and policies as well as CSL’s policies and directives.

  • Ordering of reagents and materials.

Essential Qualifications/Experience:

  • BS/MS degree in Life Sciences (Cellular Biology/Molecular Biology), Chemistry, Bioengineering, Chemical engineering or related discipline.

  • Minimum two years hands-on experience in gene delivery or gene editing or related area.

  • Experience with mammalian cell culture and molecular biology techniques and understanding of gene delivery and gene editing is preferred.

  • Experience in gene delivery with polymer or lipid or other materials is preferred.

Essential Skills, Knowledge & Attributes:

  • Ability to multitask and complete work on time.

  • Ability to contribute and work in a cross-functional, multi-disciplinary team environment.

  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English.

  • Well organised, able to plan work appropriately. Attention to detail. Mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.

  • Understanding of GLP/GMP regulatory requirements in pharmaceutical drug development.

  • Good working knowledge of Word Processing, Spreadsheets, and general PC familiarity and usage.

  • Understanding of gene therapy concepts and techniques.

  • Experience in culture and maintenance of mammalian cell lines and primary human cells. Experience of isolation, stimulation and extended culture of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPC) preferred.

  • Experience in gene delivery with polymer or lipid or other methods.

  • Experience in multicolour flow cytometry, DNA sequencing and HPLC.

  • Experience in protein and polymer chemistry.
